Getting started with a Faster and cleaner looking Blogger

Friday, September 2nd, 2011

Back in June Google announced that they would be making major changes across all of their products. The new changes all adhere to the key design principles of Google to be Focused, Elastic, and Effortless. The newest Google application to get the refresh is the Google Blog Service “Blogger”.

blogger log

from http://www.blogger.com, September 2011

Blogger is a blog publishing service that simplifies the creation and maintenance of weblogs. Blogger was first launched in 1999 but was later purchased by Google in 2003. It has been years since Blogger has undergone any major updates however according to Google August 31, 2011 Blog Post Blogger was finally given a new look that presents a new streamlined experience.

What Does Blogger Have to Offer?

Blogger lets users create free blogs that can be used for a number of different reasons such as a personal journal, collaborative workspace, collection of memos, or for any other content the users wishes to share. Blogs have changed the way people share, discover, and digest information on the web. Blogs allow groups or individuals to find their online identify and provide an outlet for them to express their thoughts, share their knowledge, and connect with others. A blog provides a setting where the organization and sharing of personal commentary can reach and influence others all over the world.

A blog serves as more than just a microphone for bloggers, it is a thriving, evolving, and interactive environment. The interaction and communication that take place on a blog can be just as satisfying as having a face to face conversation. With Blogger Comments the readers can provide feedback of the blog post, offer their opinions and even seek clarification. The Blogger comment system also enables bloggers to have complete control over the commenting process. Users can choose to automatically allow all comments or choose to accept and decline comments individually. Blogger also provides access controls so you can determine who can read and write the blog. Blogger works great for multiple user blogs as well as for individual blog authors.

The Blogger profile is another major feature that allows users to create a personal profile to showcase their likes and dislikes. The Blogger profile helps users find other blogs that are relevant to their interests as well as helping others locate their blog. The Blogger’s template designer makes creating a unique blog a quick and simple process. Users can fully customize elements such as colors, fonts, layouts, backgrounds, and they can also even add custom CSS. Users have full ability to adjust the layout using the drag and drop feature. Blogger can also upload images or import them from existing web pages.

Blogger also comes with a mobile component, the “Mobile Blog Spot”. The Mobile Blog Spot optimizes your blog for mobile viewing and you can even update your blog by sending text, photos, and videos using email or SMS/MMS.

Getting back to the beginning of the article, it was mentioned that Blogger was recently given a fresh new look. “We’ve rewritten the entire editing and management experience from scratch so it’s faster and more efficient for you—and easier for us to update and improve over time”, says Google. The new streamlined blogging experience offers multiple locations to create or edit a blog from on the dashboard or on the settings page. There is also a new, larger draft editor which has more canvas space and a new overview section. The new overview section is used to gauge your blog visitors. This section has a graph that displays your number of blog visitors, comment activity, and the number of followers that your blog has. The new section also provides a list of helpful links, related blogs, and regular Blogger updates.

Whether you’re a current user or you are new to Blogger you can turn on the new user interface settings at your convenience. When logged in, users will soon notice a popup with instructions on how to get started.

Google Places Narrows their Focus and Eliminates Third Party Citations

Thursday, August 4th, 2011

Local businesses and local searches may have recently noticed that Google’s Place Pages have gone through a transformation. Back in July Google announced that they were going to be making ongoing adjustments to all their interfaces. Since then Google has made changes across their services including Google News, Google Maps, and Google. In line with their goals the new place pages attempt to make the user experience more focused, elastic and effortless.

google places

from http://www.google.com/places/, August 2011

Like the previous renovated Google applications, Google Places is now cleaner and has more usability. It is now even easier to upload photos, submit reviews, and share great experiences with other users. Since the introduction of review on the place page last year, Google has realized the tremendous value and opportunity that they provide for its users. Google has now rearranged the page to have its own section for reviews and draws even more attention to the “write a review” actions. The new place page displays several bold and prominent write a review buttons in various locations. The main goal of this transformation was to increase user experience through reviews and generate a feeling of community amongst all Google users.

In addition to emphasizing the “write a review” call to action Google has also made the decision to remove third party reviews from the place pages. Google has expressed that these changes were made to reflect the current and future direction of the company but it has also been reported that it was to avoid a possible FTC investigation. According to Rand Fishkin at SEOMOZ, complaints from numerous third party review websites like Yelp, TripAdvisor, and Citysearch had compelled Google to remove their citations before a full blown investigation erupted. Google has showcased these reviews on their place pages for some time without ever having an issue but it seems that while Google was able to benefit the other sites were left out. Their frustration is to be expected since these websites were providing Google with a ton of reviews but weren’t receiving any form of compensation or website traffic.

Since these sites were never compensated for the reviews they claim that their content was being used unfairly. However even now that Google has removed the third party reviews those same companies argue that their websites are being unfairly pushed below Google’s own on the search engine results page.

To no surprise the number of available reviews for Google place pages are now severely limited. However Google is optimistic about their new focus on the Google only reviews and expect reviews to accumulate faster than ever. Although Google has removed the citations from the other review sites they will continue to provide links so that users can get a more comprehensive view of the place they are viewing.

In the future Google plans to continue its current direction of making the user experience more focused, elastic, and effortless. They also hope to find more ways to personalize results for local searches, integrate place page information into the web experience on all Google platforms, and as always find new ways to discover, rate, and share information and experiences with others.

Google Offers Select Businesses the Chance to Use their New AdWords Credit Card

Friday, July 22nd, 2011

The Search Engine Giant Google has recently introduced a new credit card to select U.S. advertising customers. Following the traditional release pattern for Google products the Google credit card is currently in a beta test phase and is invitation only. Invitations to participate in the new AdWords credit card experience were sent out to a handful of businesses Wednesday July 20, 2011. Unselected users who are interested in obtaining the new credit card will need to wait until the conclusion of the beta test, similar to the launch of Google+ and Gmail.

Google Adwords Credit Card

from http://www.google.com/adwords/awhelpcenter/, July 2011

Although the Google advertising credit card is a MasterCard that that is issued through the World Financial Capital Bank it can only be used to purchase search advertising from Google. The new card is designed to help businesses relieve some of the financial burden of advertising costs. When unable to purchase advertising a business can lose their connection to their customers and often experience a drop in traffic or sales. Without that outlet to reach their customers and showcase their products they miss out on that opportunity to generate revenue. Consequently, without this revenue the business lacks the resources to purchase additional advertising and propel future growth, which is where the new credit card could make a drastic difference.

Google credit card is able to lend some support and prevent a business that is short on funds from missing out on potential sales during the heavy upcoming sales seasons. With this credit card Google advertising customers are provided a line of credit with a locked in 8.99% interest rate with no annual fees. Google expressed that they realize that AdWords provides tremendous growth opportunities for small to medium sized businesses and the goal for the new card is to provide those businesses with a more supportive and attractive way to pay. The number of customers chosen to participate in the beta period is unknown and like most credit cards the minimum and maximum credit lines will vary per customers.

Although the card was created with the customer’s best interest in mind, Google also has an opportunity to capitalize on revenue from the credit card interest payments. Google makes 96% of its revenue from advertising and by offering a credit card they are not only offering their customers extra support but they can also collect extra income.

Brent Callinicos, Google’s Treasurer states “Obviously we have a robust balance sheet, so this is a way for us to use that balance sheet to help our customers, It isn’t a financial engineering project that we came up with and said this would be cool to do. It’s a customer need”.

Missing from the credit card is any type of rewards or bonus points. The company feels that given a choice their customers would rather utilize a card with a 9% interest rate over one that has an 18% interest rate and offers some sort of reward feature.

Google Implements a New News Center with an Article Expansion Feature

Friday, May 20th, 2011

Just a couple of days ago on May 16, Google implemented their new expandable Google News page. The new page provides users with more content from the news article without accessing the sites that the story is generated from. The new Google News feature showcases more top stories and also adds a drop down option that provides more details for viewers. Located at the top right corner of the news listing, the new “click to expand” option enables users to expand the content and further determine an articles relevance to their search. The drop down section provides resources associated with the article topic and additional insights into the  article.

Google News

From Google News, May 2011

The expansion option now provides a detailed summary of the article, pictures, video clips, and suggestion for other related stories. With this feature Google can offer more news headlines and provide background information without completely consuming the results page. In addition Google has also provided genre labels that denote whether the article is an opinion piece, an in depth examination, Wikipedia reference, international news, and etc.

The top stories section has gone from previously listing 3 to offering 6 or more news articles. The new Google News also presents users with the ability to personalize their top news queries. For all viewers the top 3 news articles will always remain the same and will be selected by Google bots that scour the Internet to collect popular headlines. By accessing and editing your user preferences under the “news for you” section users are able select certain topics of interest to populate the remaining top news results. Users who do not wish to customize their news results can remain operating under the “standard edition” which populates the news page with only Google generated popular news stories.

What do you think about the changes Google has made to its Google News section? Please share your opinions below or provide your feedback directly to Google at Google News Feedback.

Increasing Your Local Presence with Google Places

Friday, April 1st, 2011

mobile phone map

When considering the local presence of your business there are a couple key factors that will often play a vital role in how prominent you are in the local search results. When customers try to find your business by searching a service or product that you offer combined with the location of you business, is your business getting the necessary exposure?

One of the best ways to increase your local presence is to create and optimize a Google Places page. A place page is a profile of your business that incorporates crucial information such as your business’s phone number, map location, description, address, photos, videos, customer reviews, associated links, and any other information that is necessary for your customers to know.

Why should you have a Google Place Page?

Your customers are out there and are probably trying to find your business, make it easy for them to locate you! A place page shines a spotlight on your business and consolidates all of the important information that customers need or want to know about your company. In addition it also draws in customer reviews and your current reputation from third party sites. Also because a place page is a part of Google they will show your site more love and credibility when searches are performed in the Google search engine.

Establishing a Google place page provides an increase presence when customers perform local searches. For example when a customer searches for a product or service plus a location that your business serves users will receive a page place search result. These results will include the name of your company and the information you provide in your place page account along with a map image of your location. Along with having a Google place page some additional key defining factors that are thought to affect a business’s standing in local searches include:

  • Having a business address in the location being searched.
  • Volume and quantity of citation links which occur when other sites mention or reference your business across the Internet.
  • Quality and quantity of structured and unstructured customer reviews that are from your business place page as well as third party sites.
  • Appropriate keyword use in place page title and description. (Avoid overusing keywords)
  • Quality, quantity, accuracy, and description of inbound links.
  • Velocity of customer reviews or how frequently you are being referenced.
  • The number of times that your business appears on other businesses map searches.
  • And the photos and videos that you include on your profile page.

How to claim your business and establish a Google place page:

  1. Visit Google Places and click on the “get started” option.
  2. Create an account –although it is completely optional Google likes to see users create accounts with emails that match the domain to the website for their business because it increases the trust factor.
  3. Click on the button that says “List your business”
  4. Fill in the text fields for country, phone number, company name, street address, city, state, email address, hours of operation, customer payment options, business description, associated links, and your websites URL.
  5. Fill in the categories, Google offers five input boxes for categories and you should use all five category boxes although Google does not require you to do so. There is really no reason not to take advantage of all the category fields and if you don’t see a category that you want you can create one however it is advised that you use at least one of the ones that are provided.
  6. Select the service areas by determining a service radius or individually list specific areas that you serve.
  7. Once you input this information Google will automatically generate a map with your location and will also display all the information that you provided below.
  8. Add any additional information that you feel is important to convey to your customers.
  9. Add up to 10 pictures while complying with the Google image submission guidelines.
  10. Paste and attach any YouTube video URLs that you want to display.
  11. Click Submit, once submitted Google offers two validation methods the first being a post card which takes a week or two to arrive and provides a pin number to activate the place page. The second option is to receive a phone call that provides the activation code. Although the post card takes longer than the phone call it further builds trust from Google because it confirms that your business is at the location that you specified whereas a phone call would only ensure the correct phone number and not necessarily the location.
  12. Once you receive and enter the pin number you have claimed your business place page and can update it through the Google Accounts Dashboard. Another detail worth mentioning is that a user can have multiple place pages as long as each of the pages is associated with a different business.

Once you have created a place page for your business you should see your page results when performing a local search. By having a place page and taking into account the factors discussed earlier your business should be able to increase its local presence.

Remote Retrieval and Security For Your Mobile Devices

Friday, November 12th, 2010

iTag

from iTag.com (Nov 2010)

Hello and welcome to Chesapeake Digital Technology´s blog. We’re an information technology firm in Maryland. We provide two primary services, Internet Marketing / SEO and Technical Support for business.

It’s 2010, and almost 2011. The fact of the matter is that we live on our mobile devices. We keep our calendars, contacts, and family pictures on them. They make our lives easier and provide us with a valuable tool. Now, have you ever lost one? It’s terrifying, isn’t it? One of the first realizations to dawn on you is that your whole life is on that device. Well, fortunately smartphone makers know this is the case and there are ways to get your device back.

Apple iPhone

If you have an iPhone, you likely know that you can set your device to wipe data off of it in the event that the incorrect password is entered after X number of tries. That’s a start, but if you lost the device and didn’t enable the password, then you are at a higher risk of data theft. To this end, Apple released “Find My iPhone” as part of their MobileMe suite. It allows you to find your iPhone on a map, as well as lock it or delete data from it remotely. This means that if you just happen to leave it somewhere and there’s no chance you’ll get it back, or if you’re just being extra careful, you can remove all trace of your ownership. Bear in mind, MobileMe costs $100/year.

Google Android

As far as I know, there isn’t an official app to help you find your phone. However, there are many apps created by other developers. One of these apps is iTag. iTag provides you with the same features of Apple’s “Find My iPhone”, but for free. The big concern here, in my opinion, is using a third party to handle this matter. I would recommend waiting for Google to release an official app.

Google Talk Can Provide You With Free Communication Tools

Friday, July 30th, 2010

Google Talk

Untitled photograph of an Google Talk Retrieved July 2010, from: http://www.google.com/talk/

Hello and welcome to Chesapeake Digital Technology´s blog. We’re an information technology firm in Maryland. We provide several services, like Internet Marketing and Technical Support to small and medium business.

Google is an Internet giant. They continue to offer valuable services to consumers and today we’re going to look at a rather simple, but perhaps very effective one. Google Talk is an instant messaging services offered by the company to allow for users to chat with one another.

Let’s start with an overview of the features offered by this free service. First, it has basic chat functionality. You can send text to friends in messages via the client. This isn’t anything impressive. Just about any service offers this in some form. However, your chats are limited to text alone. Using a plug-in developed by Google, you can user voice and video to chat as well. These can allow for more synchronous communications that possess greater detail.

Another valuable feature is the file transfer option. If you are chatting with a work associate and they need a file, rather than emailing it to them, you can simply send it in the chat.

Because this is a Google offering, interconnectivity is present. All of your contacts are your Google contacts, which is a huge time saver since you don’t need to register for new account anywhere else. Also integrated is archiving of conversations. Google treats chats just like emails, so you can search them later. However, should you be discussing sensitive matters, you can always go “off the record”.

Now using this software is super easy. If you have Google Mail, aka Gmail, there is a chat client option built in. However, if you don’t want to keep your browser open all day, you can download the software to your PC to use it there. If you use a Mac, there is no official release, but a chat client called Adium, which is an amazing free program that supports tons of messaging systems, can handle this for you.

Sharing Data: Using the Cloud to Your Advantage

Thursday, June 10th, 2010

cloud computingHello and welcome to Chesapeake Digital Technology´s blog. We’re an information technology firm in Reisterstown, Maryland.. We provide several services, like SEO (Search Engine Optimization) and Technical Support to small and medium businesses.

Sharing data around the office is crucial in today’s workplace. While sharing data has always been important, what’s changed is how we think of a workplace. In the past there might have been an office of 15 people working at a single location. Now there could be 25 people, only 5 of which share an actual physical space. The rest can be telecommuting, working on the road, etc. Sharing information now becomes much more complicated. Fortunately, there are services to help lighten the load.

Apple’s MobileMe Service

MobileMe works best when you have more that just documents to share. MobileMe provides for just over 10GB of online storage, as well as syncing of Dock shortcuts, Contacts, Calendars, and more. The only storage, called iDisk, can be mounted/mapped to your desktop so dragging/dropping of files is easily done. Once completed, devices like iPhones and iPads can access any file stored on the iDisk with a free app, provided the files are under 30MB. The service offers a free 60 day trial and after that is only $100/year. It comes with an email address at “me.com”.

Google Docs

Google Docs is a great, free way to enable collaboration online. You can store any type of file online (up to 1Gb free), upload and edit Office-style documents, and share both with friends and family. The real benefit here is the ability to edit workplace documents, like Word/Pages files, in real time with other people. This makes it great for people who have to collaborate on a project. You are notified who else is viewing a document, and the changes are viewed in real time. Google Docs requires a Google Account, which is free.

Microsoft Office Live

Office Live allows for users to store Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint files online. You download a free update for your Microsoft Office products and then it allows you to save data to their servers (5GB free). The files can then be shared with others. While this service is free, it can only be access through newer version of Microsoft Office. While you likely have these programs already, you may want to consider purchasing the software as part of the price tag for this service.

That’s all for this week. Come back again next week for more small business tips!
