Tips for Your Blog and Sources for Generating More Blog Topics

Friday, October 14th, 2011

There are some days when you can sit down at your computer and immediately come up with a topic to write a blog post on, but then there are the other days when you’re just stuck. One of the hardest things about blog writing is maintaining a steady influx of topics to write about. Constantly generating blog topics can be a huge challenge. We created this blog post to provide other blog writers with tips and resources so that they never run out of topics to talk about. Sources for blog topics

The best topics to write about are the ones that the writer is passionate or knowledgeable about. Generally, topics that generate discussions or friendly debates can the most significant impact on the audience. Additionally, topics where your enthusiasm can be felt by the audience will spark the best interest and reactions from your readers. When writing a blog you should always remain focused on your audience as well as the purpose of the article. Your blog posts should have an appropriate tone and be consistent with the rest of your blog. Furthermore, be persistent with your blog entries and try to establish an inviting environment so that your readers are engaged.

Additional Blog Tips Include:

  • Target Your Niche Audience.
  • Plan and research your topics.
  • Keep a memory bank of future blog topics.
  • Separate larger blog topics in to a series of articles.
  • Find and successful format and stick with it.
  • Create eye catching titles.
  • Use a photo to separate too much text.
  • Engage your audience with questions and comment sections.
  • Respond to user comments.
  • Focus on your audience.
  • Make it relevant and worthwhile.
  • Proofread
  • Use your keywords.
  • Provide links.
  • Keep your posts simple and relevant. (Readers like lists and infographics)

Blog topics are everywhere and to find them all you need is to keep your ears open throughout your day. If you are still fresh out of ideas you may want to consider some of the following sources.

  • Read other industry related blogs:

Reading related blogs can influence your own blog topics, whether it’s an extension of their thoughts or an opposing argument. If you write for an Internet Marketing Blog then you might check out other blogs like Search Engine Land, SEOMoz, or SEObook)

  • Read blog comments:

The comments that readers post on other blogs as well as your own can often spark a new idea. You will also be able to get a sense of how popular a subject is by judging how many people responded with comments.

  • Watch the news, listen to the radio, and read the latest headline:

The topics that make the news are usually the latest trending topics and can be great source to contribute your own thoughts to the topic. (Google News, Huffingtonpost.com, and CNN)

  • See what is popular on social media sites:

Most of the time when you visit a social media website like Digg, Twitter, and Stumbleupon you are instantly introduced to a full set of topics to choose from.

  • Revisit past blog post:

The majority of topics that bloggers write articles about can often be revisited, updated, or re-written from a different point of view. Knowledge is always expanding and sometimes we may not have all the details during the initial post. It may be beneficial especially if you revisit one of your most popular blog topics.

  • Survey your Audience:

Your audience may want to learn about a specific topic or have you expand on a previous article. Give them an opportunity to make article suggestions by asking them.

  • Check out question and answer websites:

Visit websites like Quora and Yahoo Answers to find out what readers are asking about. Write a blog article providing that information and then provide a snippet along with a link to your blog in your answer.

  • Read forums and discussion boards:

The communication that takes place here is usually informative, fast paced, popular, and perfect to help generate your own blog post.

  • Read some recent interviews:

Interviews provide a lot of important information. Creating a blog with background information and interview details provide readers with another medium for that information.

  • Seminars, Case Studies, and Experiments:

Your own personal ventures can be another great place to start for a blog topic. Something you tried, something that worked, something that didn’t, it’s all relative and could be beneficial for your audience.

  • Create Google Alerts:

Google alerts will enable you to set alerts for industry key words. Read the headlines that it captures and see what is interesting.

  • Ask the people around you:

You can always ask co-workers, family, and friends to suggest a blog topic for you to write about.

  • Major company blogs:

Companies like Google, Microsoft, Apple, or any other major company that makes the news daily can be a great resource for blog topics.

If you are still unable to generate a blog topic from the previously mentioned sources then try tackling some of these generic blog suggestions.

  • Write a post by examining the pros and cons of an issue.
  • Write a tutorial.
  • Make a top 10-100 list.
  • Conduct an interview with a person from your industry.
  • Posting about current events in your niche.
  • Invite a guest author.
  • Post an “advantages/disadvantages” post.
  • Update an old post with new ideas or findings.
  • Debunk a myth in your post.
  • Make a post for beginners.
  • Create a guide for your niche.
  • Post about frequently asked questions in your niche.
  • Post about what’s popular in your industry.
  • Write about generally unknown secrets in your niche.
  • Make a post that expands on another author’s post.
  • Make a post about what not to do for your niche.

WordPress is the largest self-hosted blogging tool in the world and it is a great resource for anyone who is interested in blogging. From a Search Engine Optimization (SEO) standpoint a blog is great because it gives readers informative content and continuously references your website which makes your site more appealing to Google. • Search engines like WordPress and sites that have blogs.
  • It provides a ton of management features to edit, update, preview, and post your blog as well as review, approve or deny any visitor comments.

  • It provides complete spam protection using Akismet, one of the world’s best comment and trackback spam technology.
  • Allows for increased visitor interaction with blog commenting.
  • Offers password protected multiple user interfaces where numerous users can access, update, and post to the same blog.

AirPrint for iDevices Leads to New Levels of Mobile Productivity

Friday, September 17th, 2010

Hello and welcome to Chesapeake Digital Technology´s blog. We’re an information technology firm in Maryland. We provide two primary services, Internet Marketing / SEO and Technical Support for business.

Printing from a digital device is something that users have wanted for years. Lots of devices support this, and the number is growing constantly. Laptops have of course had this ability, but things like PDAs and Smartphones have notably lacked it. Specifically, Apple’s line of iDevices (iPad, iPhone) have been without this ability. Well, coming in iOS 4.2, AirPrint will enable these device to print wirelessly.

Since the iPad and iPhone can already view and edit documents, spreadsheets, etc, printing was a natural step. Why it has taken this long, no one can be sure. However, AirPrint will allow for users to take advantage of their mobile devices like never before. There will be two ways to use this feature. The easiest way will be to use a wireless printer that supports AirPrint. This might take a while, as this is a new feature. However, since I don’t know the intricacies of the Apple code for AirPrint, I could be wrong. In this case, your iDevice would connect directly to the printer to send the data. The other way to make this happen would be to use a utility on your computer to share the printer. In conjunction with AirPrint, your iDevice would not be able to send files the printer.

Both of these methods will be especially helpful in the home or office. If you need to print out an email, simply send it to the printer with your iPhone. Writing a short paper on your iPad and need to print it out? Done. By offering this technology, Apple takes another step closer to replacing netbooks and expanding their market share.

Ports You Should Know When Setting Up a Local Area Network

Friday, September 10th, 2010

Hello and welcome to Chesapeake Digital Technology´s blog. We’re an information technology firm in Maryland. We provide 2 services, Internet Marketing / SEO and Technical Support to small and medium business. Okay, so you know how shipping ports work, right? Ships come into certain ones, while others are reserved for other types of traffic. This is analogous to how ports work when talking about exchanging data via the Web or your local network. Now, a good firewall will block the superfluous ones for you, but you might find you need to fine-tune it a bit. There’s also a great chance you’ll never have to deal with any of this. That’s what IT people are for right? Well, in the likely chance you’re going to be making decisions affecting those people, and the rest of the company, here are a few ports to know.

Port 110/25: POP/SMTP (E-Mail)

These ports are designed to have e-mail exchanges funneled through it. I won’t get into how traffic is sorted, but suffice it to say that this is the port universally agreed upon to get email. Make sure it is left open. POP and SMTP are two different ways to fetch email, and either one might be in use for your email client.

Port 443: SSL (Secure Web Connection)

We’re all seen the little lock, castle, whatever at the bottom of our browser when we go to check our bank account info. This means that the connection is secure, because the data being sent back and forth is encrypted. Port 443 is reserved for this, so make sure it is open, or you won’t be able to go anywhere that requires a name and password.

Port 80: HTTP (Web Browsing)

Straightforward web browsing is relegated to Port 80. All of your connections, usually just Internet surfing, that use HTTP go through here. If this port is closed, you won’t be able to get outside of your network for Web access. Good for tight lockdowns, bad for just about everything else.

3 Ways to Better Market Your Small Business Blog

Thursday, August 5th, 2010

social networkingHello and welcome to Chesapeake Digital Technology´s blog. We’re an information technology firm in Maryland.

We provide several services, like InternetMarketing and Technical Support to small and medium business.

So you’ve got an amazing, potentially award-winning blog. Welcome to the Internet. There are lots of both terrific and terrible writers out there, waiting for their voices to be heard. You are now one of them. Now here comes the tricky part, how do you get them to look at your blog before everyone else’s? Well, there are a few ways to make this happen. One of the fastest and most reliable is to submit them

Digg.com

Digg is one of the most popular socially powered aggregate news sites on the Web. Users must register before posting or commenting on the site, but membership is free. If you are submitting an article, you submit the link and provide basic details about the post. You choose the category, enter the Title and Description, and send it on its way. Your post will appear on the site relatively quickly and then users browsing the New Posts section will see it. If they like it, they vote for it (Digg It!).

Facebook

We’ve talked before about using Facebook to promote your business. If you have a page for your business/blog already, then you can update it as necessary to reflect new posts or marketing strategies to draw in more users. Facebook’s status as a social networking site makes it a great place to spread your influence. Bear in mind, you may want to get involved in various Facebook groups to get your name out there.

StumbleUpon

SU was around for a while before either Digg or Facebook, and as such has a decently sized user base. You must register to use it, and then you submit your articles in the same way that you would with Digg, though StumbleUpon offers a bit more description possibilities. The cool part of StumbleUpon is their “Stumble button that takes into account info from the user’s history and randomly suggests a site.

Using WordPress to Get Your Thoughts Online Quickly

Friday, July 16th, 2010

wordpressHello and welcome to Chesapeake Digital Technology´s blog. We’re an information technology firm in Reisterstown, Maryland.. We provide several services, like Internet Marketing and Technical Support to small and medium business.

Okay, so getting your content on the Web should be easy, yeah? Turns out, it is. Granted, the scope of this content varies, but if you’re looking to throw some words and JPEGs at the Internet, WordPress is a free, quality solution to your problems.

WordPress, like Blogger, is a blogging solution for people who want to publish content on the Internet. There are several options for users looking to take advantage of what WordPress is offering. The free option is great for starters. You get to register a name and account, for example (yourbusinessnamehere.worpdress.com) as well as up to 3GB of storage. That is a lot for words and text, and best of all there is no charge. The other options are a little different, but may work better depending on your situation.

Paying for WordPress bring an increase in your storage amount as well as a few other perks. First, you can go ad-free. That’s a big deal if you are a business endeavor. Second, you can register your own domain. This takes away the “.wordpress.com” addition to the end of your blog name. You may have to change the name of your site, but this is definitely worth it.

Lastly, you could choose to host the WordPress software on your own server. This is an option for those already setup for serving Internet content or those who are comfortable with the idea. You have to do the maintenance on your own, so it might be worth just paying WordPress to do it. Either way, you can get your content online.
